Walt Disney is declaring that Captain America: Civil War will be crossing $1 billion worldwide today. With a $9m Thursday global gross bringing it up to $991m worldwide as of yesterday, the Marvel sequel will become the 25th movie to top the $1b mark globally on today, its 24th day of worldwide play. That’s two days slower than Iron Man 3 but the same amount of time as Avengers: Age of Ultron. It’s also five days slower than The Avengers. At a glance, and with leave to amend, the film is playing like a slightly bigger Iron Man 3, meaning that it will probably end up somewhere between the $409m domestic/$1.215b worldwide gross of Iron Man 3 and the $459m domestic/$1.4b worldwide gross of Avengers: Age of Ultron.
It bears noting that a well-received film featuring most of the Avengers, as well as Black Panther and Spider-Man, is going to do a bit under the total of the allegedly ill-received Age of Ultron. Now that means a case can be made that general audiences liked Age of Ultron just fine in a “see it once and be done with it” fashion and thus also like Civil War just fine as well. But in an era when we all expect the next big thing to be bigger than the previous big thing, it is worth a moment to point out that the current Marvel Cinematic Universe may have a ceiling. And that ceiling may be below the $623 million domestic/$1.5 billion worldwide gross of The Avengers four summer ago.
