A team of supertalented coders have managed to break the limits of C64 sound once again.

The Human Coding Machine from Germany and SounDemoN from Finland, have managed to create a music routine that allows you to have:

- 4 channels of 8-bit samplerate, digi playback
- 2 channels of SID synth sound
- You can filter both SID channels AND SAMPLES!
- And you have enough rastertime to not being forced to turn off the screen, and can actually do something with it ;)

This technique has been presented in the X'2008 demoparty, the bi-annual classic of the C64 scene where usually all barriers are broken and this one has been, fortunately, no exception!

The routine in question was demo'ed in the production VICIOUS SID (picture), which also included other crazy audio routines you can check out by following the attached link.

Beta testing of this software will start soon, a few artists have started to experiment with pre-beta versions of the tools, like Fanta, who made an amazing X'2008 SID music entry with his tune Fanta in Space, which you can check out by clicking here.

COMPUTE!'s Sidplayer was a music system created by Craig Chamberlain and Harry Bratt for the Commodore 64 home computer. Sidplayer was the most popular Commodore 64 music system in the U.S., as measured by the number of songs available for download on services such as Compuserve and Q-Link (the forerunner to America Online).

The aim of the Compute's Gazette Sid Collection is to try and preserve as many of those Sidplayer music files in one location as possible.
The current collection contains 15487 MUS files, 4318 STR files and 5354 WDS files.

Mario Grande:

https://youtu.be/4_P51WCEj5I

An Interview with Putzi
by Neil Carr

Putzi has created many many remixes, his style as he describes is Darkwave meets Trance and Italodance. though he admits to not yet reaching that goal.

Real name: Sascha Reichert
Handle: Putzi
Born: 1975
Nationality: German

Who were your favourite c64 composers?

Jeroen Tel, Markus Schneider & LOS, Chris Huelsbeck, Kris Hatlelid, Matt Gray,
Reyn Ouwehand, Chris Ammermueller (Beat Machine), Stefan Hartwig, Michael Hendriks (FAME).
All of them made the modern kind of C64 music, not like the childish noise we know
from Summer Games.

What are your favourite sids?

Grand Prix Circuit/Test Drive 2 (Kris Hatlelid), Danger Freak, Last Ninja 2, To be on top, R-Type,
Flimbos Quest, HVSC:Fame/FAME_1.sid, the Turrican 1 2 soundtrack, Giana Sisters,
Suburbia89 mix (Chris Ammermueller), No Mercy, theme/S-Express, Savage, Bad Cat, Turbo OutRun...
... to name just a few! ;-)

What equipment do you use?

RBF Software´s MED Soundstudio 1.4 and its cool Companion Sample CD 1 by Allister Brimble & Steve Blenkinsopp, which is the best sample CD-ROM I ever heard. Soundcards/Synths: TerraTec EWX24/96 & TerraTec EWS64 (GM & Waldorf microwavePC) The microwave wasn´t featured up to now (the Decton-cover was MED-only)... everything takes place using Mr Athlon Powers from AMD and some RAM ))

What equipment that you don't own, would you like to own?

E-MU Extreme Lead Turbo and also some of the collegues it has ;-)

What other arrangers do you like?

In alphabetical order:
Acarid (make more!), Axel Melzener, CZ Tunes (close to the original but very good),
DHS of TSW (Cybernoid2 (Pede Cyber RMX) and the BIT Live Anthem are so over the top!),
DjLizard, Frank Veeltmann (only two crazy remixes, mad like the original SIDs),
Glyn R Brown, Instant Remedy, Kent Trace Walden, LMan, o2, Oedipus, Peter Mörck,
Puffy64, Taxim, Trauma (also only two mixes: come on!);
and all not mentioned here but whose remixes I used in the SixtyFour-megamix.
Some other guys have made a cool mix each, but ONLY ONE, so I don´t mention them.

What do you look at within a sid when remixing it?

Bass line and filter sound on the synth part.

How best would you describe your musical style?

Darkwave meets Trance and Italodance ; that´s how it should sound like, but I haven´t
reached this goal in any remix.

Where/who do you get your inspiration?

Browsing through my sample collection and HVSC. Rainy and cold weather is also good!

What non c64 music do you listen to, and does this reflect in your music?

My all-time favourites are :
Pet Shop Boys, New Order, The KLF, Apoptygma Berzerk, Sash!
I like the clear melodies of PSB, the bass of New Order, the myth of KLF, the power of APB
and the full synth sound of Sash!, but it is very hard to actually see a reflection
of these things in my remixes.

Why do you remix c64 sids?

I can make some kind of dance music without having to think of a new melody and bass line,
it is all already done. I can use more time on effects and sounds before I get bored of
the track. Additionally, I think that many SIDs (hey, the unstable distribution of Debian GNU/Linux
is also called sid ;-) would have been dance tracks if the SID also had a drum machine.

What are your likes/dislikes about the scene?

I like it that there are quite a lot of electronic dance music fans among the remixers.
It is my fave style of music. I dislike that some of these guys ruin their tracks by using some
bad MP3-encoder and/or low bit rate for encoding. I had to use many EQs on these bad encoded tracks
to make them somehow suitable for the megamix. I seem to be among the few people on this planet who
are very aware of the alias-effects that some bad MP3-encoders add to the music. I can hear it, and
it is awful.

What are your fondest memories of the c64?

Playing The Last Ninja 1 2/Turrican 1 2/To be on top/Giana Sisters/Danger Freak/The Train/Gunship,
watching Crest demos, making my first good song on the Advanced Music Programmer (AMP),
soldering the parallel cable into the 1541-II for Burst Nibbler,
replacing the 8580 in my C64-II with a 6581,
getting cash for some of my programs released on Magic Disk 64.
And oh yes, freezing everything and looking at the code was fun.

Who do you think gives the scene the biggest boost?

RKO is the biggest boost, as it is somehow a permanent competition to release better remixes each time.
The feedback in C64RMX is cool, although some people behave childish, sometimes.
After all, this is not the charts.
WE are BETTER than the commercial trash-makers!

If there was a tune that you wish you could claim as your own what would it be and why?

DjLizard´s remix of ZakMcKracken sounds like the allready mentioned mix of Apoptygma Berzerk and Sash!.
That would be cool to sound like for myself.

How did you come to be part of the scene?

In 1999, I searched just for fun for TRIAD on Altavista and came across Linus´ MP3-collection of C64-remixes
on the Triad-site. So I sent my first remix (Layla ´98) to Linus for putting it up.
(I had done the remix before I knew the site...).

What is the best advice you could give to a new arranger wanting to be apart of the c64 remixing scene?

Don´t sound like Soundblaster GM (General MIDI).
Don´t remix the stuff we all have heard a thousand times remixed before,
there are so many cool tunes never used before in a 64-remix.
If you cannot add that much creative stuff to the track to make it worth being called a cover but a SID-remix,
be good in sound quality and make a dance track ;-)
If you have some friends who like the SID-sound, have them listen first to your track before uploading.

Should c64 music become commercial or should it stay underground?

I hate the idea of some stupid blonde girls collection dancing to a simple SID cover, pretending some chalalala-singing and some pseudo-rap idiot shouting put your hands up in the air; everything ofcourse at Top of the Flops ;-) I like it more like it is now, where RKO is the Free Software server with contributors around the planet. And me with the SixtyFour megamix doing some kind of Linux distribution/package in a musical way, with a GUI-based installation tool )) If you want to make C64-music chart-compatible, you have to remove the difficult parts in it the Britney-fan cannot understand, but then it is not C64-music anymore.

What remix of your own are you most pleased with?

R-Type. It sounds addictive, especially with headphones.

What is the most difficult part of remixing c64 sids?

Defining the part that has to be original SID sound. Not every
arpeggio should make it into a remix, but in some moments they are essential
and you need them.

Lastly, What would you like to say to the scene?

It´s all about music at $d400 and up...

The main thing that stands out in this interview is the absence of the big early c64 composers in the question regarding his favourite c64 composers, Rob Hubbard and Martin Galway in particular. So it shows that even the not so famous had their following, and why not!

For International Women’s Day, I want to honor the women who have worked for the Capcom Sound Team over the years. In this picture taken in the late 80’s, we have Kumi Yamaga, Manami Matsumae, Tamayo Kawamoto, Harumi Fujita, and Junko Tamiya. Of course, there are other women who have graced Capcom's classics with their musical talent too that aren't limited to these 5 pictured here such as Mari Yamaguchi, Yoko Shimomura, Yuki Satomura and Yuko Takehara.

As a child of the 80s, I will never forget the feeling of walking into a crowded arcade -- the sounds, smells, excitement, etc. This page is dedicated to recreating the audio portion of that experience in the form of a long, non-looping ambient audio track.

"If I close my eyes while listening to Arcade Ambiance, I can clearly envision myself hanging out at the local Golfland Arcade circa 1983 sporting the latest in early 80's fashion (camouflage Vans and a Members Only jacket), while feeding quarter after quarter into Dig Dug, Galaga and Phoenix. Thanks for taking me back to a happier time." --David

«I thought this case was done and dusted about 10 years ago with Zombie Nation paying Whittaker a substantial sum for the use of the riff?»

«(a) Not a substantial sum, but that's besides the point.

(b) David agreed they could pay him for use of the riff, which was originally used illegally. What he didn't agree to do was for them to use that gracious permission to claim to own the piece, deny authorship or royalty rights, and claim sole right to grant covers based on the tune (and threaten legal action if David granted rights on his own tune).

Basically, it's like renting someone a room, and then coming back from holiday and finding they've claimed the house, and will sue you if you come anywhere near it. Also they got the licence under false pretences».

Thought I'd add a comment to this. It' nice to see someone posting this so I would like to add some extra info. The game was developed by someone who lived quite near to me, so Pygnosis thought we should partner up. The developer wanted this style of music so this is what happened. As a lot of game music then was about how much RAM you had to play with, it was a real squeeze to compress as much as possible into the available memory AND make it work with the game dynamic (in the case of in-game music). If I remember, this music occupies 90Kb or less which is less memory than the image in the video above!

Complete History Of The Soviet Union, Arranged To The Melody Of Tetris

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWTFG3J1CP8

To Moscow I came seeking fortune
But they’re making me work til I’m dead
The bourgeoisie have it so easy
The Tsar’s putting gold on his bread
The people of Moscow are hungry
But think what a feast there could be
If we could create a socialist state
That cared for the people like me:

I am the man who arranges the blocks
That descend upon me from up above
They come down and I spin them around
Til they fit in the ground like hand in glove
Sometimes it seems that to move blocks is fine
And the lines will be formed as they fall -
Then I see that I have misjudged it!
I should not have nudged it after all
Can I have a long one please?
Why must these infernal blocks tease?

I am the man who arranges the blocks
That continue to fall from up above
Come Muscovite! Let the workers unite!
A collective regime of peace and love
I work so hard in arranging the blocks
But the landlord and taxman bleed me dry
But the workers will rise! We will not compromise
For we know that the old regime must die
Long live Lenin, kill the tsar!
We salute the sickle and star!
I am the man who arranges the blocks
That continue to fall from up above
The food on your plate now belongs to the state
A collective regime of peace and love
I have no choice in arranging the blocks
Under Bolshevik rule, what they say goes
The rule of the game is we all are the same
And my blocks must create unbroken rows
Long live Stalin! He loves you!
Sing these words, or you know what he’ll do...

I am the man who arranges the blocks
That are made by the men in Kazakhstan
They come two weeks late and they don’t tessellate
But we’re working to Stalin’s five year plan
I am the man who arranges the tanks
That will make all the Nazis keep away
The Fuhrer is dead, and Europe is Red!
Let us point all our guns at the USA
We shall live forever more!
We can start a nuclear war!

I am the man who arranges the blocks
That are building a highly secret base
Hip hip hurrah for the USSR!
We are sending our men to outer space
I work so hard in arranging the blocks
But each night I go home to my wife in tears -
What’s the point of it all, when you’re building a wall
And in front of your eyes it disappears?
Pointless work for pointless pay
This is one game I shall not play
I am the man who arranges the blocks!
But tomorrow I think I’ll stay in bed
The winter is cold, I’ve got plenty of gold
And I’m standing in line for a loaf of bread
Maybe we’d be better off
If we brought down Gorbachev

I am the man who arranges the blocks
That continue to fall from up above
The markets are free! So much money for me!
Tell me, why should I care for peace and love?
The markets are free! So much money for me!
Tell me, why should I care for peace and love?
Peace and love, peace and love!

And now the wall is down, the Marxists frown
There’s foreign shops all over town
When in Red Square, well don’t despair
There’s Levi’s and McDonald’s there
The US gave us crystal meth
And Yeltsin drank himself to death
But now that Putin’s put the boot in
Who’ll get in our way?

So we reject free enterprise
And once again the left will rise
Prepare the flags to be unfurled
For we’re seceding from the world:
We shall regain the Georgian soil
We shall obtain the Arctic oil
We shall arrange the blocks and toil
Forever and a day

Game over

Mini interview with Alistair "Boz" Bowness about how Martin Galway's long lost music to Street Hawk was found and released on the C64

Ocean Software, trying to dominate the market, bought licenses to make conversions of tv-shows such as Knight Rider, Miami Vice and Street Hawk. Street Hawk ultimately took too long to finish and so Ocean scrapped it. Martin Galway has been talking about the music for the game in interviews and it has left fans eager to hear what he composed. Boz was the guy to get the Street Hawk music going on the C64 and I just had to ask him a few questions about this!

Boz, you had the chance to write a cross-assembler to make Martin Galway's long lost tune(s) to Street Hawk available to us fans. How did that come about?
Well, I knew it was written in Ocean's Cross Assembler (Atari ST to C64), but that program wasn't available to us. So I had to put my thinking cap on and find another way of doing it. The thing is, whoever made the cross-assembler was basing their code on ZEUS, the assembler that Galway was using beforehand. That editor used "tokens", much like C64 BASIC worked. To save space, for example, the word "PRINT" wasn't stored as five characters, it was stored as a one-character token (ASCII code 153 in this case). ZEUS assembler did the same thing, but for assembler mnemonics. So, I worked on two programs: One that turned this slimmed-down tokenized file into human-readable form (so I could see what the actual source code looked like) and then an actual assembler that processed these mnemonics into actual machine code.

Martin Galway had sent over his original C128D to the UK along with the rest of his disks. Why was it important that you had the original C128D? What was on those disks and did anything code-wise aid you in the creation of the cross-assembler?
Galway started making music on an original C64 and when he moved onwards to a C128D, he actually transplanted his 6581 chip from that computer to his new C128D. We wanted the closest recordings we could of him listening to his compositions the way he heard them. To start with, this wasn't so much of a problem. It’s when he started using filters that it got important. Commodore shaved as much money as it could to make a decent profit from its computers, one of the side-effects of this is that chip manufacturing – from MOS whom it owned – was compromised somewhat. The filter settings were always a little bit different from one chip to the next. On one chip the low-pass filter could be very "open", for instance, but on another, it could sound very "dull". Interesting side-note: When Galway started composing tunes using filters, he had actually written a subroutine that could open up or close down the filters, but no developer added that option in their games.

There was nothing code-wise that aided me, I had to start from scratch. So, I wrote little apps that interpreted all these tokens to see what they were actually trying to do. That took me a little while!

Was there a copy of the famed Ocean Development System on there?
Unfortunately not. As mentioned, I knew that the first assembler Galway used was ZEUS, so I tried to get as much information on that, because Ocean's tool developers based the Ocean Development System (ODS) on that. But there was plenty of gap-filling to do!

Please tell us some detailed information about the cross-assembler and how you went about and crated it.
Now we get to the most embarrassing part of the the story, and it needs a little set-up: When this opportunity came about, I was heavily into using PHP to make a lot of automated web sites for customers. I was a consultant at this time so I had a reputation to uphold. The deadline was quite short, for reasons I can't really remember but I think we needed the CD to be ready for Back in Time Live: Brighton, so we could promote it in a live environment. Anyway, I think I can feel a lot of people cringing right now, BASM (which is what I called my suite of software, short for "Boz's Assembler") was written in PHP. Yes, I know... but it was the scripting language that was in my head at the time. I didn't use any of the actual web-writing stuff, I just made it a command-line program. I don't think anyone has made a C64 assembler in PHP (AND NEVER WILL DO!), so I'm a first on that. The important thing here is that it actually worked.

I was not expecting PHP! I didn't know that you could use PHP for such tasks. Cool! What did you end up with in the end? An assembler file that you could run on a C64/emulator and also edit in a text editor/cross-assembler?
Yes, to go into a little more detail, there were two programs: One that detokenized assembly files into human-readable assembly mnemonics, and one that actually compiled this into 6502 code. Before these two procedures, I used a parallel cable (called the X1541 cable) and The Star Commander, a program which used this cable to copy from a 1541 disk drive. I just went through them all to get them onto the PC a soon as possible.

Did you consult Martin anything during the process?
Yes, we had quite a few messaging sessions where I just needed clarification on certain subtunes, or if he remembered any special mnemonics from the Ocean cross-assembler that were non-standard to 6502. I got a lot of help from him, which was good!

When you were looking though the disks, did you already know that it was a good chance Street Hawk and the other small ditties that was found were on there?
Galway was pretty convinced that he had kept all of his stuff in one disk case, so the chances of finding Street Hawk were high. It was right near the back of the bunch though, actually I think he kept the disks in chronological order, which was good! I remember there were a couple of disks that didn't load properly though. That's the trouble with 5.25" disks, especially those left in an attic for 20+ years. I did all I could to retrieve anything I could from the "broken" disks, but I don't think it was anything relevant. Thankfully the disk that had Street Hawk on it was readable.

I remember the first time I compiled Street Hawk: due to a misunderstanding of a non-official ADD command (which doesn't exist; it was a ZEUS built-in macro of CLC and ADC), I forgot to clear the Carry flag; every note that was played by the lead instrument just rose upward and it was the most awful thing to hear! Jason "Kenz" Mackenzie happened to be working behind me and we turned to each other, doubling up in laughter to the awful sound we were hearing!

How exciting was it to look though the disks?
Oh, fantastic. Galway had written labels on nearly all of the disks, so when I read them, I was thinking "ooh, I'll hear such-and-such and see its code!". But there were also a few unlabeled disks, which is even better! Street Hawk was one of them. A disk that had no label - what treasure am I going to find?! That was awesome.

How long did it take you to get Street Hawk playing, counting from when the C128D was in your hands?
A couple of months, actually. I recorded all of the tunes I knew I didn't have assembly files for (by just transferring the SID file from HVSC to disk and then playing them on Galway's C128D). After that is when I knew I had to knuckle down and detoken the assembly files, then write an assembler. Street Hawk was actually the last SID I recorded.

Why was there tunes from other games in one of the versions of Street Hawk?
I asked Galway what they were for and originally they were going to be used as small "transitions" between different parts of the game. He thought it would be cool to use snippets from other tunes he's done!

Where is the C128D now?
It's back in Texas, in Galway's safe hands, as far as I'm aware.

A big thanks to Boz for answering my questions! I truly love digging into stuff like this. If you guys have additional questions, please write them below. I’m sure Boz don’t mind answering them.

Bell'articolo comunque.
