In the current study, text analysis software was used to examine 886 letters of recommendation written on behalf of 235 male and 42 female applicants for either a chemistry or biochemistry faculty position at a large U.S. research university.

In other words, just because there were relatively few gender differences in the letters of recommendations analyzed in this study, we cannot infer that gender stereotypes do not still play a role in how applicants are evaluated as part of the search process.
