I've been thinking of moving to Italy. I'd really like to buy something very small for myself, far away from the city.

Is it true that, a lot of the younger Italians are moving to the city for employment, higher standard of living,...? I mean, this is a trend in most countries but would it be possible to find a job in IT in one of the smaller towns in Sicily or are those all in the city center?

Also, I speak English, French, Dutch & Spanish but not much Italian (working on it though), is that going to be a problem or is it also the case that English is ok too seeing as how it's the lingua franca of IT (sort of)? Thanks!

Ma tanto si fa tutto in nero, proprio quello non è un problema.

Piuttosto sono appena tornato dal paesello Natale in Sicilia dopo anni.
Al di là del senso di trascuratezza più o meno ovunque, le strade mi hanno impressionato: segnaletica orizzontale inesistente ovunque, niente linee di demarcazione delle corsie, stop, precedenze, nulla.

Per quanto riguarda il turismo, sarà stata la settimana di ferragosto, ma tutto è carissimo ed il livello dei servizi offerti spesso basso.

Peccato.

Il tizio meglio si stia a casetta sua che non ha idea di come si viva in un paesino siciliano oggi.

Digli che non rinunci a nulla nel suo paese per venire qui (ma nemmeno ad un posto come pulitore di cessi, per intenderci) e che prenda un affitto per un paio di settimane, e che sia disponibile a rimetterci l'affitto per 10 giorni.

Currently, unemployment ratio is at 11% in Italy, and youth unemployment (<=25yo) is at a whopping 35%, which is only better than Greece and Spain in all EU.

We have more lawyers, medics, architects than we can currently hire (but we would NEED more doctors, just the State has no money for them).

Engineers can easily get a job (noy necessarily a good job and almost surely not in a small town).

Thinking of a small Sicilian town, I think your profile fits well with a job in a high level hotel/restaurant/spa, since you speak many languages, which most people don't, and would be able to deal with foreign clients. But it's unlikely you can get it without speaking Italian.

By the way, everything in Sicily except Palermo can be considered a small town by US standards.

I live three months a year in Ragusa. You will not find IT work (in any small town), but the cost of living is very low. You can find four-bedroom apartments to buy for under 100k euros. Fruits and vegetables at street markets seem practically free compared to many places. Eating in restaurants is generally expensive, though.

You will need to learn some Italian because the level of English here is still very low compared to most of Europe. With your other languages, I'm sure you can be proficient quickly though. People here are very welcoming.

Start doing contracting online or something where it doesn't matter where you live and you'll do fine even if you're not making much. The median Italian income is only like 21k euros and many make much less and survive. Health care here is very good and nearly free for all residents.
