This is kinda hilarious to me, seeing as about one and a half years ago my whole family went to visit my sister who lives in Sendai with her Japanese husband and kid. We took the opportunity to go to Kyoto and Tokyo as well, and pretty much anywhere I bet we stood out like a sore thumb, seeing as we are super white Swedes and none of us is shorter than 5'8", my brother being the tallest at 6'4". And we're pretty much the nicest tourists ever, especially my mom and dad. Mom in particular was mortified every time she accidentally mixed up any of the polite quick phrases my brother taught her. We probably looked super intimidating with our height, but nothing could be further from the truth.

While I'm on the subject of "languages", while we were there my brother was the interpreter since he's studied Japanese and can make himself understood reasonably well. One night we were out in Tokyo and eating at a restaurant in Odaiba after having spent the day there and he got to talking a bit with the cute Japanese waitress. He's so focused on getting the Japanese right that he doesn't notice that all the while the waitress is super flirtatious with him. We're talking standing in a way to access the her assets, twirling her hair with her fingers, eying him all over, all the international signals of "see me, do me". When we had to ask for quick directions as we were leaving she even damn near pushed herself past one of the other girls to answer my brother herself. My brother had no clue. So of course we waited all of one minute before me and my younger sister (I have two) started teasing him mercilessly about it, as siblings should.

Bè cmq io ve lo dico, se mi dite che in Giappone se sei alto, fisicato/ok, biondo, occhi azzurri...agli occhi delle giapponesine magari che hanno viaggiato meno nell'occidente (del resto io in tutta l'asia asiatica non ci sono MAI stato, pur avendo viaggiato direi abbastanza) dovrai sembrare come un cazzo di Sole che cammina o una specie di divinità dorata, gli anime hanno spesso qua e là il character "svedesante" super biondo etc e spesso è un figo / un eroe / un protagonista fascinoso roba così.

Cioè ha senso come cosa in generale.

My friend's dad speaks decent Japanese, and was at work one day when two visiting Japanese businessmen entered the elevator he was in and started talking mad shit about how stupid Americans were.

One of them said something along the lines of "we have to learn English, and this stupid asshole (referring to my friend's dad) doesn't speak any Japanese."

My friend's dad paused for a few seconds, then replied, "I speak a little, enough to understand what you just said, anyway."
