Super-rich Swiss village opts for £200,000 fine instead of accepting 10 refugees
A Swiss village, one of the wealthiest in Europe, has refused to take in its government imposed quota of asylum seekers, voting to pay a fine of £200,000 instead.
The residents of Switzerland’s alpine resort Oberwil-Lieli, where there are 300 millionaires among a population of 2,200, voted “no” in a referendum over whether to accept just 10 refugees.
Swiss government proposals had outlined a quota across its 26 counties in order deliver on promise to take 50,000 asylum seekers across the country, but Oberwil-Lieli voted by 52 per cent to 48 to reject the refugees.
One resident of the village told MailOnline: “We do not want them here it is as simple as that.
“We have worked hard all our lives and have a lovely village that we do not want it spoiled. We are not suited to take in refugees. They would not fit in here.”
“We were not to be told if the 10 were from Syria or if they are economic migrants from other countries," he said.
“Yes, the refugees from Syria have to be helped and they are better served by being helped in the camps nearer their home.
“Money could be sent to help them, but if we are housing them here it sends out the wrong message. Others will come and risk their lives crossing the ocean and paying people smugglers to bring them.
“They are not likely to be able to speak the language and if some of the refugees have children they will have to go into the local school where they will need special focus.”
In April 2016 there were 1,748 applications for asylum in Switzerland compared to 1,376 for the same month the previous year.
The Swiss Government has pledged to resettle 3,000 Syrian families fleeing Isis and the civil war in the country.
Steve Symonds, Amnesty UK's Refugee Programme Director, called on the West to take on their fair share of refugees.
Mr Symonds told The Independent: "Just as it's wrong for richer countries to keep leaving it to poorer countries to host the vast proportion of the world's growing refugee population, so more wealthy communities need to share responsibility with the less affluent.
"This is as true in Switzerland and the UK as it is in countries like Lebanon, which are currently hosting very many more refugees than European countries. We all need to play our part or the current crisis will keep getting worse."
Andreas Glarner, Oberwil-Lieli’s right wing mayor, denied that by refusing to accept refugees they were being racist.

Ragionissima. :alesisi:

There's nothing anyone can do to stop this. Personally I derive great pleasure from watching our neighbourhoods overrun by the descendants of people whom we abused and exploited for so long. We taught them English so they could serve us better. We displayed our wealth so they would be in awe of us. Now England is their dreamed destination. The irony of it all. Come children. Come to the land of hope and glory.

I worked in a refugee centre in the Australian outback. We had thousands of refugees, mainly from Iran and Iraq. The genuine refugees (generally from the Afghanistan mountainous regions) were so grateful and often invited me to chat and eat with them. The Iranians and Iraqis however would complain non stop that their accommodation and food wasn't good enough. That it was a violation of their human rights that they weren't just let free into Australia as soon as they stepped off the boat. They were given 3 good meals a day, access to a football field, gyms, gaming rooms, internet within the centre yet they complained and winged to each other, us and to the media. After 3 to 4 months they were given a place to stay in Australia and that was that.

I've never exactly been clear on who "deserves" help in this situation?
If they were veterans, who went to war and came back to nothing, sure - they deserve help. They did something to deserve it.
You were born in another country and your life sucks? Ok - why do you deserve help? Your parents fucking doesn't magically grant you the right to the fruits of another country's labor.
I grew up sleeping in a bathtub in a trailer park being careful of heroin needles while walking to and from school. Both my parents worked - my mom a housekeeper at a motel, my dad an air force MP.
Both worked long hours and did their best to provide for us - things were rough for a time there, to the point where we couldn't even have a pet, that's how bad off we were.
But my parents scrounged, saved, and invested a huge portion of their lives into ensuring that my sister and I had what we needed and eventually they were able to buy a house, and our lives improved.
Going to college, I worked at McDonalds AND Walmart AND took a full 12 course load at the community college because we couldn't get any financial assistance short of student loans to go to a better school. I busted my ass off through those and got told, upon moving to another apartment in the SAME COMPLEX that I had to "reestablish residency" by the college, for another thousand bucks worth of classes.
I deserved access to those resources because of my family and my own contributions to the tax systems. I lived on Ramen. My cat ate better than I did.
So why, exactly, should I take the safety of the neighborhood I spent the past 15 years of my life working towards finding purchase in, and permit people that have not done anything to work for or contribute to it; have no possible way of contributing to it, and are guaranteed to be a burden on it and leech off the contributions I make to my community?
What, precisely, makes them "deserve help"?

Migranti, 700 morti in tre naufragi
