Shadi Hamid. Brooking Institute:
I suppose all of this is a reminder that no matter what we do, the Middle East will matter. There's no way to simply wash our hands of the region, even if that might have been the ideal preference of our past two presidents.
Under Obama, we tried "don't do stupid shit." Under Trump, we're trying "do stupid shit." Neither seems to work particularly well, it turns out.
Which means that at some point—if we ever want to actually have a good Middle East policy, which we haven't had for the past two decades (if ever)—there will have to be a fundamental rethinking of both the means and ends of US policy in the region.
One possible option is to do nothing, but the problem there is that doing nothing, in effect, is still doing something, because it would mean maintaining whatever the status quo happens to be on a particular issue.
For example, what would "doing nothing" look like on Egypt? Doing nothing would quite literally mean continuing the $1.3 billion in military aid to the regime, which obviously isn't nothing at all. Changing the status quo would mean doing, well, something.
This is the problem: Whether we do something, nothing, or something in between something and nothing, we are doing something which falls well short of neutrality. There is no innocent bystander option. In short, what we do—but also what we don't do—has wide-ranging consequences
