The historical basis for the timeline is taken from the work of LGBT-focused historian Norena Shopland, whose research into Welsh LGBTQ+ history has been supported by Swansea University.
The council has stated online that the timeline came about following the 2021 provision of training in “LGBTQ+ Language and History” for local museums and libraries to “encourage the celebration of local stories of sexual orientation and gender identity”.
The work has also come about after the Welsh government launched the LGBT Action Plan for Wales in 2023, which stated that: “Welsh LGBTQ+ history, culture, and heritage in Wales has contributed to our legacy and experiences as a nation and these stories need to be told.”
