I don't have too much time to talk about the reporting that went into this because I've got shit to do. I will share that i spent a good amount of time in their discord listening and observing. And what struck me most is how sad the whole situation really is.
These guys know for the most part this is a lost cause. That nothing they do will meaningfully impact what the vast majority of developers and gamers have already chosen to dedicate themselves to, a diverse and equitable industry. They know that.
And for some reason, rather than accept that, they've lashed out. Just like GG 1.0, there is no cause here. There is no force, there is no movement. These are toddlers melting down in a grocery store, eager to be soothed and coddled by bigger people with bigger platforms.
But when you hear them speak about the reality of their so-called 'goals' "Sweet Baby is just the beginning we need to take...down...the venture capitalist firms." You can literally hear the tone change in their voices like 'oh yeah uh.....yeah nah'
So its about the memes, the vibes, the cameraderie, of having a "cool" place to go, under the veneer of a "righteous" cause that's really a place for them where they are encouraged and celebrated for saying horrible stuff relatively unchecked while they post pics of their dogs
And i say relatively unchechedk because I had an interesting experience during my observations. They swear up and down they're not racist (though what gets said and posted in their chat rooms...ehhhh are ya sure about that) but they did try to 'walk that walk'
i spoke out in their voice chat. told them who i was and what i was there to do. someone jumped on me immediately like 'prove your loyalty say a slur' and started screaming the N-word at me. They immediately banned that guy and apologized. It was...sweet??
After that, we had a decent conversation talking about video games and recommendations and journalism processes and what not. When they're not being gross, these are normal people.
And what makes it sad to me is that the camaraderie they feel like they need, they could just have without all the bigotry. They said to me 'we just want to be heard' but the most interesting things they have to say have nothing to do with railing against 'woke' games.
