Wha!? Why are you now PRAEY for the Gods!?
Oh yea that...so we didn’t want to do this but we had to change our game name from Prey for the Gods to Praey for the Gods. Thankfully we get to keep the logo but we will spell it “Praey for the Gods”. Honestly, we could make this entire newsletter about our thoughts on this. Trademark law is what we were dealing with and we aren’t under any NDA so we can state the opposition in this situation, Bethesda/Zenimax. We could’ve fought this and we did think about it for quite a while. Something like a trademark opposition can be long and depending on how far someone wants to fight it can be very expensive. We didn’t want to spend our precious Kickstarter funds, nor did we want to have to ask for additional funds to fight this in court. Using backer money towards something that doesn’t go towards the development or backer rewards felt horrible to us. Even if we did win we’d have to spend a solid chunk of our funds and in our opinion it wasn’t worth it.
The truth is we initially thought about naming the game Præy for the Gods prior to our initial trailer. The logo has both the woman praying against the duality of prey, and thankfully we get to continue to use that. We figured people would have a hard time trying to type in the æ symbol in search engines etc. This was back in 2015 when we posted a trailer on Facebook and Twitter with had no idea if 100 or even 1000 people would watch the trailer. We were applying for both Prey for the Gods, and Præy for the Gods trademarks shortly after as we realized the extent of what we were making. Unfortunately, Zenimax chose to oppose our mark, as they felt both were too similar to their mark “Prey” which they purchased from Id Software, in 2009. While we disagree with their opposition we were able to come to an agreement.
It was something that kept me up many nights, and no doubt shifted our focus from our game frequently. Worrying about the outcome if we went to trial, if we’d lose our fans or walk away from the mark and still potentially get sued for millions on trademark infringement. This is really something no starting company should have to deal with let alone a tiny team of 3. So the fact that we came out the other end intact still developing the game was a win. One that will no doubt shape our company moving forward.

O Star Wars denuncia o fa pressioni su Star Trek e viceversa...
Beh quelli di the banner saga avevano ricevuto pressioni da quelli di candy crush saga mi pare di ricordare. (o qualcosa di simile)

Ma li son ritardati quelli che hanno permesso a King di mettere sotto copyright la parola saga.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects.../posts/2233701Welcome back to our second installment of Q&A for the Gods, where we offer up your questions on the altar of answers! Brian Parnell, director of Praey for the Gods, is here with us again!
"Will the soundtrack dynamically change depending on boss phases?"
Yes, we dynamically change the music during boss encounters. We usually have an intro/mood theme that'll kick off the encounter which then transitions into the main theme. As the battle continues, the track continues to adjust and switch depending on the phase or if the player is on or off the boss.
"How much does the weather affect you in the game? Do any areas have any different effects?"
We've been fine-tuning the weather quite a bit. The weather's effect depends on where you are in the world in addition to the outfit you have on. So say you are high up in the mountains with a thin outfit, then the storms will be much colder than if you were lower down and with a thicker coat. We broadcast this to the player in a number of ways, from shifting colors to the amount of snow on screen and even changing status icons.
"Concerning the glider/banner, are there any mechanics with upwinds or gusts planned?"
With the glider/banner, wind alone can alter your intended path (for good or bad!). We currently have implemented geysers that erupt and give the player the ability to launch up into the air and are looking at other updrafts/gusts mechanics. We also do offer ways the player can improve their glider/banner in-game.
"There seems to be a degree of customization in the game. To what extent will we be able to personalize the protagonist? Will we be able to wear our prey as proof of our victories?"
We offer customization through outfits. Each outfit offers unique upgrades/resistances that would benefit the player in certain situations. The player can choose to explore the world and find/earn/upgrade these outfits in the game. You can get fur and other materials from things you hunt in the wild and those allow you to upgrade the outfit if you want.
"Will the world reward exploration and if so, how? What are things we might want to explore and find?"
Yes, the world definitely rewards exploration. Exploration can get you a number of different rewards. These rewards can be items to improve your chances with bosses, consumables that improve your stamina, materials to upgrade outfits, shortcuts to bosses, and other secrets.
"Will PftG be like SotC where we are somewhat guided to each boss or will we be stumbling across bosses in this massive world?"
Leading up to and during our Closed Alpha, we've tried and tested a number of different approaches to this. From that feedback, we've implemented a solution that allows players to find the bosses on their own or play them in a more guided order. So as a player, you can play the game how you want, whether that's following the guides or finding them on your own terms (I.E., a giant flying boss soaring over your head).
"When shooting arrows or any other consumable ammo, will it be possible to recover it? If yes, will we be able to use the ammo again right away or will it require crafting resources?"
Yes, you can pick up arrows you have shot, but they do have a chance to break so not every arrow can be retrieved. The ones you do pick up go back into your quiver. You won't need to repair an arrow -- when it breaks, it's gone. Wood is pretty easy to find in game since there are a lot of trees for you to get wood and make arrows/fire etc from, though, so get ready to get crafting!
"Do you plan on coming to any conventions or expos, whether this year or next year? Do you have plans on showing off the game if you do?"
We've applied for PAXWest so hopefully we'll be accepted to that. There might be other conventions we attend but every time we do one it eats up time from development so we try to select conventions/expos that work best for us. If we were to do a convention we'll definitely have a playable build of the game for fans and press to try out. We'll probably have some swag to pass out, too.
Thanks again for your support!
