"I am ready to exchange my resignation for Ukraine's NATO membership": Zelenskyy outlines conditions for stepping down as president
"If it is absolutely necessary for me to leave my post, I am ready to do so. I can exchange it for NATO membership—if such conditions exist, then immediately, without prolonged discussions. I am focused on Ukraine's security today and do not intend to remain in power for decades. This is probably my dream," Zelenskyy stated during a press conference marking the third anniversary of the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine.

Re: Va tutto bene in Ucraina oppure...

Re: Va tutto bene in Ucraina oppure...
Borgo, scansati. È tempo per una vera riflessione su questi anni di guerra. Mettetevi comodi.
Here we are: three years of war.
I remember the days and weeks just before the SMO started. I was looking at local Telegram channels from the Donbass, following local citizen reporters, just trying to make sense of what's happening.
Frightened Donetsk teenagers getting flashbacks to the worst days of 2014 due to the Ukrainian terror shelling. Grandmas dying because the water and electricity in their tiny villages was shut off by Ukrainian rockets. Weird troop movements all along the line of contact. OSCE reporting on massive Ukrainian shelling every day -- classic preparatory artillery fire before a ground offensive. Ukrainian DRGs operating behind DPR & LPR lines, trying to capture border checkpoints.
I remember thinking: is Kiev really gonna do it? Is the Donbass doomed? After eight years of Minsk II madness, I had no conceptual framework for expecting Russia to actually act. That's why I didn't believe it would happen, right until it did. In retrospect, I heard things that would only make sense as preparation for the SMO back in summer '22, but I just couldn't believe it.
Then, the tanks started rolling. The missiles started flying. Kiev closed the borders and announced a general mobilization. But, of course, we didn't really do it. We did, but we also didn't. The missiles were not hitting barracks full of soldiers. The rules of engagement were tight and got many of our boys killed.
But, we did it. The Ukrainians capitulated. We pulled our troops back from Kiev. Chernigov, Sumy, Kharkov. VDV units aborted their assault into Nikolayev while it was going on because they got new orders. I thought: we're really going back to 2013, huh. At least it didn't cost that much blood.
Then, the Ukrainians killed their own peace negotiator. Just shot him without as much as an interrogation. They 'took back' the capitulation, and turned on what would become known as the meatgrinder.
I wouldn't have expected them to bring back world war level industrial mass warfare out of pure spite, with no possible way of actually winning. But, then again, I wouldn't have expected us to start a war, not do any decapitation strikes and give the order to avoid killing too many enemies. It was bizarre.
Then, they inflicted a painful defeat on us in Kharkov oblast. They figured out our lines were too thin. They spent weeks throwing middle-aged mobiks at us until it was a few reservists and volunteer battalions holding hundreds of miles of frontline. They thought they'd just keep rolling, take Starobelsk, collapse our entire logistics network in the northern Donbass and force us to abandon the entire war.
But they made mistakes, too. A few dozen Russian SWAT officers held Balakleya for much longer than the Ukrainians thought they could. The BARS-13 volunteer battalion held Krasny Liman against three Ukrainian brigades while in full encirclement. For weeks. These weeks saved us. These weeks gave us time for the partial mobilization, and the first mobiks were enable to reinforce the Svatovo-Kremennaya line just in time to stop the Ukrainians. They beat their heads against it for months to no avail.
At the same time, they attacked Kherson. Hundreds, thousands of them perished in pointless attacks across the naked steppe. We still abandoned the city later -- the river was simply too much of a threat.
But the Ukrainians suddenly realized that the core of their army was dead. So they built a new one. With an ambitious plan. Out of spite, they got half of their new army killed by Wagner in Bakhmut. A PMC won the largest battle of the 21st century so far and inflicted a defeat on NATO. What the hell, man.
But their big plan still got the green light. The great 2023 Zaporozhye offensive. I won't bore you with a list of Russian military units that showed superhuman heroism during those hot summer weeks. There are too many of them.
We saw their armor burning by the hundreds. We saw their delusional hopes and dreams vaporized by FAB after FAB after FAB.
And still they held on. Now incapable of serious offensives, they just cling to their bunkers and foxholes. We smoked them out of Avdeevka. After ten long years, we broke the siege of Donetsk for good.
No more frightened teenagers getting flashbacks.
But it's not over yet. A cornered animal is at its most dangerous. It is only the will of their paymasters that stops them from unleashing a wave of terror much worse than their Chechen Islamist friends did in the 2000s. We have to remain vigilant.
But, whatever may come in the future, one thing is certain. The Russian soldier has filled many, many pages of Russian history -- yet to be written -- with golden letters. No matter what his government did or didn't.
And his biggest triumph is yet to come.
And we shall be its witnesses.
